Sebacic acid is produced from castor oil by using sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid with catalysts including zinc oxide and phenol.
He decided that practical synthetic fibers could not be made from castor oil, the only practical source of sebacic acid.
His researches on sebacic acid ( 1802 ) and on bile ( 1807 ) deserve mention as well, as does his discovery of hydrogen peroxide ( 1818 ).
Nylon 510, made from pentamethylene diamine and sebacic acid, was studied by Carothers even before nylon 66 and has superior properties, but is more expensive to make.
It is found that the cavity dimensions are optimal for inclusion of suberic acid but that with a longer acid sebacic acid or a shorter acid adipic acid the interaction is less favorable.
